The Common Center Between the Energy and You

3 Benefits Of Using LED Business Signs

Posted by on Nov 6, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

One of the best ways to get potential customers to pay attention to your business is with attractive signage. Thankfully, you are past the days where you need to have a custom painted sign to stick in your window. Customizable LED signs are now very affordable for businesses of all sizes, and provide many benefits over traditional signage. Energy Cost Savings While the initial costs to purchase an LED sign can be expensive, it will be cheaper to run over time than other types of signs that light up. Even something as simple as a neon “Open” sign can be expensive to operate. The cost of operating a neon sign is $125 a year, compared to an LED sign that is as little as $5 a year. The LED sign is 96% cheaper, which is a cost savings that can help pay for your LED sign over the years. The lights used in an LED sign will last much longer than an incandescent light bulb too. LED lights are rated to last over 50,000 hours. When compared to incandescent light bulbs, you would need 42 light bulbs to light a sign for the same period of time. Custom Signage The best way to catch the attention of potential customers is to change up the signs that they see on a regular basis. If you have a traditional sign created, it will stay that way forever. You can swap them out with a new sign, but that can be expensive just to change the messaging that they see. Neon signs are expensive to create and permanent, which is why they are commonly used in open signs—they will never need to change. LED signs let you connect them to a computer, and you can change the messaging that customers see at no cost. Messages can rotate during the day with different offers, and customers will tend to read it more often as they want to know what has changed. Animation The biggest benefit of LED signage is how it uses animation to capture the attention of customers. You can make words scroll across the screen, flash, or even change in color. These attention grabbing techniques are simply not possible when using other signs. By taking advantage of the latest technology in LED sign, you can connect with your customers in new ways that you never could before, and do it in an energy efficient way. Why You Should Choose A Hydrovac Truck Service For Your Excavation Needs

Posted by on Nov 3, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Hydrovac excavation is using water under high pressure to excavate ground cover and expose buried objects, such as water and sewer piping. It is less destructive and also faster than traditional excavation techniques, such as hand digging. A hydrovac truck service can help you get the job done more quickly and at lower cost. How it Works The truck uses its onboard power to generate a high-pressure stream of water. The resultant mixture of material (soil, rocks) and the water, called “slurry,” is then pumped into a storage tank for later disposal. As the excavation proceeds, the water and slurry are constantly pumped away so that the target of the excavation is exposed and surveyed as quickly as possible. Water is Better There are several reasons why water under pressure is an ideal excavating tool: Water dissolves soils, especially tough soils such as caliche, when it might be very difficult to break the soil with hand or power tools No air pressure is generated and no debris is thrown into the air Water acts as its own coolant and lubricant Water can be heated to thaw and excavate frozen ground Less Environmental Impact Traditional excavation methods can be quite damaging to the environment. Hydrovac truck service avoids this damage: Little, if any, dust is generated and what material is excavated is combined with the water into slurry and properly stored, not turned into debris which could migrate off-site Municipal waterways and water supplies are protected because the excavation process is carefully controlled Contaminants and spillage are more easily controlled, so accidents and unexpected problems won’t cause environmental damage Who Should Use Hydrovac Trucks? In a nutshell, any industry that deals with buried pipelines and conduits can benefit from hydrovac truck service, such as Elite Waste Disposal Inc. These include municipal power and water utilities, telecommunications companies, drilling companies, oil and gas providers, and factories that transport materials and supplies through underground pipes. If you regularly need trenches dug and want to do so in as environmentally friendly and cost-effective a way as possible, then hydrovac is the way to go. Less Damage to Your Infrastructure It’s all too common an occurrence–you’re digging downward with heavy equipment to find a pipeline, and then you find it, all right–by puncturing it. This isn’t a problem with hydrovac truck service. The target of the excavation is exposed gradually and the water hitting the pipe–unlike, say, a backhoe doing so–won’t damage it. This alone is a very good reason to use hydrovac–you won’t have to spend any time repairing the pipeline you...

3 Ways Recycling Can Make Cleaning Up After A Party Easy

Posted by on Nov 3, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

After a large social event like a party, there’s almost always a tremendous amount of trash hanging around. While you can always just bag it all up and dump it, a more responsible approach is to recycle as much of it as you can. Here’s a few things you can do to mitigate the after-party drudgery beforehand. 1. Purchase with Recycling in Mind The first thing for you to do is to make sure that you consider recycling in the planning. If you don’t want to collect tons of garbage afterwards, there’s quite few things you should consider. Purchase items that use minimal packaging Use reusable plates (not paper plates) Use non-disposable utensils (not plastic) Purchase drinks that come in bottles you can return to a depot Use decorations that you can use again The more things that are reusable, the less garbage you have to worry about. The more things you use that come in minimal packaging, the less you have to fill up your trash bin. Finally, the more things you use that are biodegradable, the more you can recycle rather than toss. 2. Make it Easy for Guests Never leave your guests guessing about what they should do with their trash. You should set out trash bins that clearly state what they are for. You can have a bin for bottles, a bin for recyclables, and a bin for non-recyclable garbage. Post signs if you have to. 3. Dealing with Food One of the things that many people do after a party is toss out the leftovers. You should never toss good food, especially if there’s something more worthwhile you can do with it. Keep it for yourself and family Compost it, rather than trash it Package it up and hand it out to friends and family See if you can donate it to a shelter or kitchen Some of those suggestions are for leftovers, but the compost idea also works for food waste from the party. You may want to set out a bin specifically for food waste. Cleaning Up Afterwards If you incorporated recycling into your planning, then you shouldn’t have too much to worry about. Cleanup will go much quicker because you should have everything already neatly separated. You can take the bottles to the bottle depot. You can take your other recyclables to where they need to go. You can compost the food. You can dump all the reusable dinnerware into the dishwasher. And you can get the cleaning process over with so you can go relax. Properly Disposing Of Liquid Waste

Posted by on Oct 21, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

There is a common problem that people have where if something is out of sight, it is out of mind. Unfortunately, this means that there are a lot of people who are not aware of how harmful it is to dump certain liquids down their drains or in the gutter. Dumping substances like oil, paint, chemicals, or other liquids down the drain can cause different problems such as damage to your pipes, septic tank, and even the sewer lines in the road by breaking or clogging them endangering the water supply because everything eventually floats to a water treatment facility or a body of water There are other ways to properly dispose of liquid waste products. Some of the most common questions that people ask are what they can do with their liquid waste if they can’t pour it down the drain and landfills won’t take it. The most common liquid wastes that people need disposed of are oil and grease from cars and cooking. Motor Oil and Car Grease If you have ever bought motor oil and done your own maintenance on your car, you may have noticed that on the can or bottle it specifically says not to pour it down a drain or into a storm drain. The reason for this is that it can harm underwater vegetation, aquatic life, and sewer lines. If you have motor oil that you need to dispose of, you can always take up to 5 gallons to a service station where they can turn around and recycle it or dispose of it properly. There are also companies that specialize in liquid waste removal that can come and pick it up to dispose of it properly. Cooking Oil and Grease Many restaurants and home businesses that use a lot of cooking oil for frying or cook a lot of animal fat know that disposing of the after products can take a lot of time and effort. These can clog up pipes really fast and require extra attention for disposal. Some landfills will take oil when it is poured into a sealed container. You can also mix it with kitty litter before putting it into closed bags for disposal. However, if you are in one of these businesses that has a large amount of these products, it is best to hire a company to come and pick them up. This not only makes your job easier, but you can rest assured that they are getting taken care of in the right...

Why Recycling Matters

Posted by on Oct 15, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Recycling is a great way for the average person to help keep the environment pristine. Check out the information below to learn more about recycling. What Are Some Recyclable Items? Batteries Clothing Electronics Glass Metal Paper Plastic Biodegradable matter What Does the Recycling Process Involve? The recycling process is a three-stage cycle. Stage One The first stage is commonly known as the collecting and sorting stage. In this stage, waste materials are collected from the waste bins and sorted according to type and use. After sorting, the products are ready for the second stage. Stage Two The second stage is the manufacturing stage. This is the phase in which the processed and sorted materials are re-generated into new products. Stage Three This is the final stage in the cycle, in which the new products are distributed to the consumers. Once the product has served its purpose, the cycle will begin anew as the products are collected. Why Is Recycling Important Anyway? Recycling helps the planet Recycling eligible waste products helps the environment in many ways. For example, we all know that paper comes from trees and that thousands of trees are cut down each year just to produce paper. Fewer trees means less oxygen in our environment. By recycling paper, we can help to reduce the number of trees being cut down. Recycling helps save energy Significantly less energy is required to process recycled materials than to process virgin materials. The energy required for transporting the virgin goods is also saved. The saving of this energy reduces pollution and reduces the strain on our health and on the environment. Recycling reduces the waste matter in dumps Dumps are full of non-biodegradable waste matter that takes a significant length of time to decompose. Recycling reduces the amount of waste material that ends up in the dump. If recycling is not encouraged, dumps will eventually fill up, leaving us with the daunting task of finding new locations to discard waste matter. Recycling helps to save money Products made from recycled materials require fewer processing costs, allowing the manufacturer to pass the savings on to the customer and offer the products at a reduced cost. As the world’s population increases, recycling becomes ever more important. In order to effectively combat the forces of destruction at work in the environment, it is up to us, the common citizens, to make a difference by recycling. What Happens To Hazardous Materials After They Are Collected?

Posted by on Oct 9, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Waste disposal is something most people use as a way to get rid of trash and unwanted items, but you cannot throw hazardous items into your trash. Hazardous items must be disposed of properly and there are many laws in place relating to this subject. Have you ever wondered what happens to the hazardous items that are thrown away? If so, here is what waste disposal companies do with these types of items.  Recycled All hazardous chemicals and products must be kept separate by type. If a waste disposal company collects multiple types, their first step is to separate them. This is necessary because most of these items require different procedures for disposal, and separating them makes it easier to recycle the items. While not all hazardous items can be recycled, many can. Paint is an example of this. You cannot throw gallons of paint in your regular trash because it can contaminate the ground. When waste disposal companies collect gallons of paint, they usually mix them and turn them into paint products that can be sold. This would be considered recycled paint, and it would work just as good as brand-new paint. Many other hazardous items can also be recycled, including: Used oil Electronics Household batteries Light bulbs Some items must be taken apart before they can be recycled, and an example of this is a car battery. The plastic is removed from car batteries and is turned into usable plastic, and the lead is removed from them and reused. Neutralized or Destroyed The other two processes used to get rid of hazardous items are neutralizing them and destroying them. When products are neutralized, they are turned from a hazardous state to a state that is safe for the environment. This is something that is done with pharmaceutical products, such as medication. One way to neutralize medication is to let the pills dissolve in water. Some products cannot be recycled or neutralized, and products like this are often destroyed by burning them. This is a process used for syringes, certain parts of light bulbs, and other items. To do this, hazardous waste collection companies place the items in large furnaces. The items are completely destroyed this way, but companies that do this must follow rules relating to pollution because burning things creates smoke. If you want to do your part in this, you should avoid throwing hazardous items in your garbage. If you are not sure what items are included in this, you can contact a waste disposal company, such as Newcastle Salvage, to request a...

Non-Destructive Testing: A Windfall For Art Collectors

Posted by on Oct 3, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Authenticity is the key value proposition in collectible art.  From coins to jewelry to the occasional rare antique find, fraudulent works have been a continuous problem in the world of art curation for centuries.  Until modern times, the process of authenticating a work and establishing its value to collectors and galleries was more often a matter of personal opinion rather than established fact.  But now, advanced methods of non-destructive testing are equipping even hobbyist antique hunters with the tools they need to secure their investments. Which Collectors Can Use Non-Destructive Testing? Jewelry Collectors Numismatists Canvas Art Collectors and Curators Ancient Document Curators Garage Sale and eBay Collectible and Antique Buyers Whether your collection consists of priceless works by masters of the craft, or a small number of unusual antiques or coins, having a documented pedigree for your collectibles is crucial to establishing their value.  The true worth of a work of art can be obscured and ultimately lost if a buyer must hedge against the possibility its authenticity won’t hold up.  Buyers and sellers can add to the value of their collections, and the market for them, by using non-destructive testing methods.  Such methods can document the nature and history of a work or object and may even serve to enhance its value. How Does It Work? One of the easiest methods of non-destructive testing is portable digital X-ray imaging.  These techniques are most useful with paintings and other kinds of documents.  Art authentication is also known as non-destructive evaluation or NDE.  According to R. Gr. Maev, and his associates, NDE techniques are becoming more and more sophisticated. In fact, some advances are leading to new methods of restoring art as well. Curation and Conservation Non-destructive testing and evaluation of some works produces other benefits.  Many times, information about a work of art can be uncovered through the use of scientific techniques like mass spectroscopy.  If you are an art collector, such information could add to the value of your works.  Even hobbyist antique collectors have discovered previously unknown treasures through detailed study.  Most people have heard the story of the $4 painting that turned into a $2.4 million auction sale.  This kind of art conservation is vital to culture and history.  With these new techniques, it is also getting more precise and less expensive. Your collection, no matter how large or valuable, can benefit from these kinds of scientific techniques, even if it only leads to a better understanding of what you own.  The fact that it could also lead to an appreciation in your investment doesn’t hurt either. Benefits Of A Home Water Filtration System

Posted by on Oct 3, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

According to Homewyse, it can cost anywhere from $370 to $500 to have a water filtration system installed in the home. While the high price tag deters many homeowners from having such a system installed, there are truly many benefits to having a home water filtration system. Cleaner Drinking Water As you likely know, tap water tends to contain small traces of chemicals, such as fluoride and chlorine. While these chemicals are obviously not hazardously detrimental to your well-being, they may have a negative impact on your health. Therefore, it is a good idea to have a home water filtration system installed so that these chemicals are removed from your drinking water, likely making said water healthier for you. Also, when you have a home water filtration system, the likelihood of drinking contaminated water decreases significantly. If your city’s water source becomes contaminated with chemicals, these chemicals will likely be removed by the filtration system, reducing the chance that you’ll get sick from drinking the water. Prevents Soap Scum Soap scum refers to the white solid that typically accumulates on dishes and glasses after washing them. The combination of hard water and soap is what actually causes the soap scum to appear. Hard water usually contains magnesium and calcium ions. These ions react with soap’s fatty acid component to create soap scum. Since water filtration systems remove these ions from your drinking water, you won’t have to deal with soap scum on the dishes. Soap scum also appears when chlorine vapors are released into the air. The home water filtration system will also remove the chlorine, so it won’t be possible for soap scum to form due to chlorine vapors reacting with the air. Less Chemicals in Clothing A home water filtration system cleans and filters all water from every water source in the house. This means that the water used for washing clothing will also be filtered. Many people harbor the misconception that there is no difference between using tap water and filtered water to clean clothes. The truth is that when you wash clothing with chemical-laden water, these chemicals become embedded into the fabric. As you can see, despite the rather high cost of a home water filtration system, there are many benefits of having one installed. Not only will the filtration system make your drinking water healthier, but it will also prevent soap scum from accumulating on your dishes and chemicals from becoming embedded in your clothing. FAQ About Home Water Softeners

Posted by on Oct 3, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

If you live in an area where the public water is “hard,” it’s wise to have a water softener installed in your home. This device attaches to your home’s main water supply, and it treats the water as it comes into the building. Although water softeners are common, many homeowners don’t quite understand what they do or why they are important. The answers to these frequently asked questions will shed some light on that topic. How do water softeners work? Hard water is water that contains a high concentration of calcium and magnesium. These minerals change the way the water behaves. They make it harder to produce a lather with soap, and make the water more irritating to skin. A water softener works by removing these minerals from the water. The water passes through a tank that contains beads made of polystyrene. These beads are bonded to sodium ions, which replace the magnesium and calcium ions in the water. When the water emerges from the water softener, it is much lower in calcium and magnesium. It’s not salty either — the amount of sodium soft water contains is very small. Is it safe to drink water that has been treated with the water softener? Water that has gone through a water softener is no more or less dangerous to drink than your original, hard tap water. As stated above, it contains only trace amounts of sodium that will not cause harm and won’t cause it to taste salty. No harsh chemicals are used to soften the water. You should still strongly consider running the water through a filter to remove potential contaminants before drinking — these are the same contaminants that may have been in your water before it went through the softener. Why is having soft water so important? Softening your water is important for two main reasons: It protects your pipes and appliances. The minerals in hard water can deposit on the insides of your pipes, and in appliances such as your coffee maker and washing machine. Over time, this mineral buildup may render your machines unusable and cause blockages in your pipes. By removing these minerals from the water as it enters your home, you prevent these issues. It’s better for your skin. Hard water allows soap deposits to build up on your skin. This makes your skin dry, flaky and itchy. Soft water, however, does not leave these deposits, so your skin stays feeling moist and healthy. If you live in an area with hard water, don’t let fear prevent you from installing a water softener. This device is completely safe, and has benefits both for your family’s health and for your...

Learn How To Turn Old Wine Bottles Into Halloween Decorations

Posted by on Oct 3, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Before tossing your old wine bottles into the trash, consider reusing them as great holiday decorations. Creating unique pieces of art with the bottles is quite easy to do and will cost a fraction of what you would pay for the traditional holiday decorations. Use the following guide to learn how to turn three wine bottles into great Halloween decorations that you can use year after year. Prepare the Bottles Soak the bottles in warm water overnight. When you wake up, peel the labels away from the jar and use a sponge to scrub away any glue residue that is left behind. The bottles will look more professional, if there are no labels on them. Sand the Bottles The glass will be very smooth and it will be difficult for the paint to stick to it, if you do not rough the surface of the bottles a little bit. Use 180-grit sandpaper to lightly sand the bottles. Wipe off all of the powder with a clean rag when you are done. Paint the Bottles Stand one of the bottles on a paper plate in your yard. You want to spray paint the bottles outside to ensure proper ventilation of the fumes that the paint will emit. Use white spray paint to paint the bottle by moving the can back and forth as you paint. This ensures the paint doesn’t collect in one area more than another. Paint the next bottle orange and the next bottle green, using the same technique. Allow the bottles to dry for two hours before continuing. Add Details to the Bottles Use acrylic paint and a fine-tipped paintbrush to add details to the bottles. The fine-tipped paintbrush will make adding intricate details easier because it is easier to control than a thick-tipped paint brush. On the white bottle, add two large ovals for the eyes of the ghost and an even larger oval under those two ovals to create the mouth for the ghost with black paint. On the orange bottle, create a pumpkin by making two triangles of the eyes, a smaller triangle for the nose, and a half crescent shape for the mouth with black paint. You can choose to have the pumpkin smiling or frowning. On the green bottle, paint the top of the bottle black. Add a wave of jagged edges to the bottom of the black edge you are creating. This will create the hair of the Frankenstein bottle. Add two circles in white with black dots in the centers to make the eyes. Add a red line that goes from one side of the bottle to the other to create the mouth. Add two circles to either side of the bottle to create Frankenstein’s neck bolts. These bottles are very easy to make. This is a project that you can do on your own or with your kids. Be sure to spray the finished bottles with polyurethane spray to protect them so the paint stays put for as long as possible. To learn more, contact a company like North Hill Bottle Depot with your...
